IT WAS QUITE A NIGHT IN RIYADH

I am not sure what night this was in early 1991, but this photo was
sold openly on the streets of Riyadh in the days after it happened.
In the upper left is an Iragi scud missile, one of many that night,
that rained down on Riyadh while we all huddled in our villa. At the
first sound of the air raid sirens, the first unannounced after a
series of announced tests, I assumed this would be the real thing. I
walked outside the villa and looked into this sky and watched the
scuds on entry. Suddenly a series of "whooshes" as the patriot
missiles lifted off for intercept. Then the explosions... right over
my head and a shower of parts spattered across the landscape. I
quickly dashed back inside and caught my breathe. This was the first
time anyone seriously shot at me with an intent to kill. I had just
crossed over into a new perspective on living.
